Speed and Agility Drills for Singles Players
Why Speed and Agility Matter in Singles
Singles pickleball places dramatically higher demands on your athleticism than doubles. In doubles, you cover roughly half the court. In singles, you cover everything — baseline to kitchen, sideline to sideline. Without explosive speed and sharp agility, even the best technical skills will leave you a step behind. A dedicated speed and agility training program is not optional; it is essential for competitive singles players.
Ladder Drills for Footwork
Agility ladders are the gold standard for developing quick, precise footwork. Incorporate these three drills into your routine:
| Drill | Description | Reps |
|---|---|---|
| One Foot In Each Box | Run through the ladder placing one foot in each square. Focus on fast, light steps and arm swing. | 3 sets x 2 lengths |
| Lateral Shuffle | Side-step through the ladder, keeping your shoulders square and knees bent. Both feet enter each box before moving to the next. | 3 sets x 2 lengths (each direction) |
| Icky Shuffle | A pattern drill: step into the box with your right foot, then left, then step out to the right side, then repeat the opposite. This develops multi-directional coordination. | 3 sets x 1 length (each direction) |
Lateral Movement Drills
Singles demands explosive lateral movement. These drills target your ability to cover the full width of the court:
- Sideline-to-Sideline: Start at the center of the baseline. Sprint to the right sideline, touch it, sprint back to center, then to the left sideline. Repeat for 30 seconds. Rest 30 seconds. Do 5 rounds.
- Defensive Recovery: From the net, backpedal to the baseline as fast as possible while staying balanced. Touch the baseline and explode forward back to the kitchen line. This simulates recovering from a lob.
- Mirror Drill: Face a partner who moves laterally. Mirror their movements — if they go right, you go right. Stay in an athletic stance. This builds reactive lateral quickness.
Sprint Training for Court Coverage
- Baseline-to-Kitchen Sprints: From the baseline, sprint to the kitchen line and touch it. Backpedal to the baseline and touch it. Repeat 10 times. Time yourself and try to improve each week.
- Suicide Runs: Start at the baseline. Sprint to the kitchen line and back, then to the center of the court and back, then to the opposite baseline and back. This builds multi-distance acceleration.
- Reaction Sprints: Have a partner point in a direction. React and sprint 10 feet in that direction, then recover to center. This trains your first-step explosiveness.
Balance Training
Good balance keeps you in control during fast rallies and sharp direction changes:
- Single-Leg Hops: Hop forward and backward on one leg for 30 seconds. Switch legs. Progress to hopping laterally and diagonally.
- Bosu Ball Squats: Stand on a Bosu ball and perform bodyweight squats. Keep your core engaged and knees tracking over your toes.
- Lunges with Rotation: Perform a forward lunge and rotate your torso toward the lead leg. This mimics the body rotation needed for groundstrokes while maintaining balance.
Weekly Speed & Agility Plan
| Day | Focus | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Ladder drills + lateral movement | 30 minutes |
| Wednesday | Sprint training + balance work | 30 minutes |
| Friday | Reaction drills + full agility circuit | 40 minutes |
| Saturday | On-court speed work (game-like movement) | 20 minutes (after play) |
Consistency is key. Two to three dedicated sessions per week will yield noticeable improvements in your court coverage within 4-6 weeks.
