Lobs and Overheads: Singles-Specific Tactics

The Lob: Singles’ Great Equalizer

In singles pickleball, the lob is one of the most valuable weapons in your arsenal. When your opponent is pressing at the kitchen line, when you’re out of position, or when you need to change the rhythm of a rally — the lob is your answer. Unlike doubles, where the lob can be covered by the partner, in singles the lob creates a solo crisis for your opponent: they must turn, sprint, and hit an overhead, often on the move.

When to Use the Lob

  • When your opponent is at the net: This is the classic lob scenario. If they’re crowding the kitchen line, a lob over their head forces an immediate retreat.
  • When you’re in trouble: Caught in no man’s land? Opponent hitting a screaming drive at your feet? A defensive lob buys you time to recover and reset the point.
  • When your opponent has a weak overhead: Some players are excellent at the net but terrible at tracking and smashing lobs. Identify this weakness early and exploit it relentlessly.
  • To change the pace: After three or four fast-paced baseline exchanges, a lob completely disrupts the rhythm. Many opponents struggle to adjust from “drive mode” to “retreat and smash mode.”

Lob Execution Fundamentals

Element Detail
Disguise This is the most critical element. Set up as if you’re hitting a drive or a drop. The paddle preparation should look identical. Only at the last moment do you open the face and lift.
Paddle Angle Open the paddle face slightly — about 10-15 degrees. Too open and the ball goes too high and short. Not open enough and you’ll drive it into the net.
Swing Path Keep the swing compact. A low-to-high motion with a shortened finish. Think of it as lifting the ball rather than hitting it.
Target Aim for the baseline corners. A lob that lands near the baseline forces the longest possible sprint for your opponent. A short lob is a smash waiting to happen.

The Overhead Smash: Your Counter-Offense

When your opponent lobs you, you need a reliable overhead smash. Key technique points:

  1. Turn sideways: Get your body perpendicular to the net. This allows for maximum rotation and power generation.
  2. Point at the ball: Use your non-paddle hand to track the ball — the same way baseball outfielders track fly balls.
  3. Hit at the highest point: Don’t let the ball drop. Meet it at the apex of its trajectory for the best angle and power.
  4. Aim for the open space: In singles, the entire court is your target. Aim for the sideline or the deep baseline corner. Avoid hitting back to the center where your opponent can recover easily.

Training Drills for Lobs and Overheads

  • Lob Accuracy Drill: Place a towel in each baseline corner. From the kitchen line, hit 20 lobs aiming for each towel. Track how many land within 3 feet of the target.
  • Overhead Repetition Drill: Have a partner feed lobs from the kitchen line. Practice your overhead smash from various positions — deep baseline, mid-court, and close to the net.
  • Lob-to-Smash Rally: Play points where the only shots allowed are lobs and smashes. This forces you to develop both skills in a competitive format.

Common Mistakes

  • Telegraphing the lob: If you drop your shoulder or change your grip visibly before the lob, the opponent reads it and covers easily.
  • Lobbing too short: A lob that lands at mid-court is a guaranteed smash for the opponent. Always aim deep.
  • Overhead overhit: You don’t need 100% power on every smash. A controlled 70% power smash placed accurately wins the point more consistently than a wild 100% shot that goes long.
  • Forgetting to recover: After hitting a lob, don’t admire it — immediately move to a ready position. The opponent might return it.

Master the lob and the overhead, and you gain a complete toolset for handling any vertical dimension of the game. These shots transform you from a one-dimensional player into a multi-threat competitor.
