Pickleball for Beginners: How to Start Playing in 2026
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Combining elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, it is played on a badminton-sized court with a perforated plastic ball and solid paddles. It is easy to learn, gentle on the joints, and incredibly fun for all ages.
Why Pickleball is Taking Over the World
- Easy to learn: Most beginners can start rallying within 15 minutes
- Low impact: Ideal for seniors and those with joint concerns
- Social: Doubles format makes it a highly social sport
- Accessible: Courts are being built everywhere — schools, parks, community centers
Basic Equipment You Need
To get started, you need three things:
- A paddle — choose one that fits your grip size and weight preference
- Pickleballs — outdoor balls have smaller, harder holes; indoor balls have larger holes
- Comfortable court shoes — any court shoe with good lateral support works

The Rules in 60 Seconds
Games are played to 11 points (win by 2). Only the serving team can score. The serve must be underhand. The ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed (the two-bounce rule). The non-volley zone (the kitchen) extends 7 feet from the net — you cannot volley the ball while standing in this zone.
